Glass Design Primer

For the Architects, designers and self-build / design-build oriented Owners and Contractors out there.

We all love the look of glass handrails, stairs and BIG GLASS in general on our projects.

We will start with the basics, a how to guide to get more of it in your project:

There are a few approaches:

a. Draw the glass elements into your project like cantilever glass rails for example and then cross your    fingers that you won't need any engineering to get your permit submission through the municipalities unscathed because if you do, the whole thing gets hung up at the gate. The plans examiners being the gate-keepers.

 b. Organize your structural engineering for the glass work upfront and co-ordinate the package with your team; owner, contractor, your own envelope designers in your architectural practice and the structural engineer on the project such as CUCCO engineering + design (www.structuralengineertoronto.ca).

 c. Try to use proprietary glass systems that come with engineered shop drawings that meet the requirements of that gatekeeper, the plans examiner.

 d. Just show standard handrails that comply with the guard code, more on that separately, and then stickhandle this problem post permit in a permit revision so that you have more time to assemble the team, detail the building and figure out whether your client can really afford your vision for their building!.

 e. I could go on ...

Galvanizing

1. Hot dip Galvanizing - There are only 3 companies inToronto that Hot dip Galvanize according to an industry source (major steel fabricatorin Toronto). Two of them are american owned and seemed to have gotten worse. There are strange surcharges on galvanizing and the steel fabricator literally has to wait there to get it glalvanized sometimes for a few hours. - then the order gets lost and either ends up at the bottom of the galvanizing bath or on someone else's project. The fabricator then has to put together another piece of steel and get it made. - The long and the short of it is that it is very difficult to get galvanizing on a smaller job and the surcharges are significant. - minimum order $350, this can be more expensive than the piece of steel. Alternative: There is no alternative but putting on a zinc rich primer is one. Tremclad is not a real product at all that can be relied on. So... Galvafroid, two step process, very expensive. This is the trade name in the industy and we discovered that it was about $400 a can. Another option is: CROWN Bright Galvanizing Coating Premium 7008 is an aerosol can for touch ups $15 A can will set you back up $150. It is 65% zinc rich and the can weighs 50 lbs accordingly. It is made by an american company, AERVOE Industries. It can be found at the distributor: MArkham Industrial Last note: Putting a nice finish such as powder coating will require light sandblasting of the hot dip galvanizing. Remember Hot dip galvanizing only lasts 10 years.

Marsh Filter

David,

Here are some water-septic consultants that may be useful and/or lead us to the one that is.

A) RIVERCOURT ENGINEERING Inc.

This one is the most interesting because he is a hard-core environmental systems guru that has actually had artificial wetlands made etc, however, they are not fond of working on conventional septic projects. This one is at the leading edge of this kind of work. They may not be interested in working on more conventional projects.
